Plan Your Visit
These notes reflect how the city works day to day. Fares, fees, and rules change—always confirm on official sites before you book.
Climate
Singapore lies about 1° north of the equator: roughly 26–32 °C year-round, high humidity, and short thunderstorms. The northeast monsoon (about December–March) often brings more prolonged rain; the southwest monsoon (about June–September) can be slightly drier in between showers. Any month is fine if you pack breathable clothes, sunscreen, and a compact umbrella.
Transport
- MRT and LRT — Trains run roughly 5:30–24:00 depending on line; last-train times are posted in stations. No eating or drinking in paid areas.
- Fares — Distance-based. Tap in and out with Visa/Mastercard contactless, mobile wallets (e.g. Apple Pay), or a stored-value EZ-Link / NETS FlashPay card. Tourist pass options exist for unlimited travel over fixed days—compare against your actual trip pattern.
- Buses — Same payment methods; you must tap out when alighting.
- Taxis & ride-hail — Metered taxis and apps (e.g. Grab, Gojek, TADA) operate city-wide; surcharges apply at peak times and for ERP (congestion) zones—ask or check the app.
Money
Currency: Singapore dollar (SGD). Cards are accepted almost everywhere in malls and chains; hawker centres and some small shops may be cash-only or use local QR payment—keep S$20–40 in notes for food courts.
Practical facts
- Tap water is safe to drink from kitchen taps in hotels and public buildings (always follow local advisories if any).
- Tipping is not expected; a 10% service charge may already appear on restaurant bills.
- Power: type G plugs (UK-style), 230 V. Bring an adapter.
- Left-hand traffic — look both ways when crossing; jaywalking is enforced in busy zones.
Etiquette
- Queue for trains; let passengers off before boarding.
- On escalators, stand left if you are not walking (norm in central areas).
- In hawker centres, “chope” (tissue packets on seats) marks a taken table—don’t remove them.
- Littering, smoking outside designated areas, and importing chewing gum for sale carry penalties—read signs.
Sample 3-day outline
A realistic pace for first-timers:
- Day 1: Civic District (optional: National Gallery), walk Marina Bay, late afternoon at Gardens by the Bay, evening bay lights.
- Day 2: Morning Chinatown or Little India hawker breakfast; HarbourFront to Sentosa — pick either beaches + one attraction or a full day at Universal Studios.
- Day 3: Singapore Botanic Gardens or Kampong Gelam; Orchard Road or Bugis shopping; airport early if flying out (Changi has Jewel and terminals worth time).
Visa rules, health requirements, and arrival forms change. Use the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and your airline for the latest entry conditions.
